畫作名稱 : Dusk

1948 “Dusk”, by Li Mei-shu of Sanxia, first generation artist of Taiwan nativism painting. “Dusk” can be said to be one of Li’s representative works. Its dimension is #120 (194x130cm). It can be said to be a rather large piece of artwork. This work depicts the beauty in the labor of Taiwanese women. The composition takes French naturalist artist, Breton’s, 1859 artwork “Calling in the Gleaners” as a reference. The content of “Calling in the Gleaners” also depicts a vast countryside where all the women are getting ready to go home after a day’s work.

Li Mei-shu painted “Dusk” in 1948. What is special about this painting is that, it is a portrait-length oil painting. The main character is the lady in the middle, carrying a burlap sack. It is painted with the artist’s older daughter, Li Li-xia, as the model. This image of a woman in hard labor demonstrates the diligence, hard work and persistence of Taiwanese women. The figure on the lower right-hand corner is modeled after her second daughter, Li Li-yue. Bending over to pick up something that is possibly a sweet-potato, or some other crops, the composition reveals a change in high and low. And then, let’s take a look at the shorter girl in the background of the medium shot. She is modeled after her third daughter, Li Li-yu. This little girl is between her two older sisters. It feels as though she is gazing into the distance, seemingly in the same direction as her oldest sister, Li Li-xia. In terms of emotions in paintings, I feel a flow of emotions and an interaction from her.

In general, what everyone notices about this piece of artwork is its atmosphere. That feeling of dusk. Through the painting of this land, Taiwan, through characters, through the atmosphere brought about by dusk, Li Mei-shu deeply touched the hearts of people. What is touching here, we can all take a look, is in the very top, above the soothing horizontal line. It seems to give us stability and reservation on this horizontal line. After a long day of hard work, every character is ready to take a rest. It’s just like life; there are times of hard work and there are times of intermittent rest. This expression is what Li Mei-shu would like to convey. Secondly, the actions and postures of every person in this piece of artwork seem to be the same. Actually, everyone can see that the action of every person is different. In the foreground, there are basically five people gazing towards the front or downwards. To the right in the background, there is this woman wearing a headscarf. She is looking at the scenery outside of this painting. It gives people the idea of gazing into the horizon, something like an iconology, a sort of reflection.

Lastly, we would like to express the reason why this piece of artwork 1948 “Dusk” has become one of the representative works of Li Mei-shu. Everyone can take a look at how she is able to bring the painting to life, through the actions of the characters, expressions and color tone. Also, most importantly, it is how she presents the sense of space. From the characters in the foreground to the background, it gives the feeling that this is a very spacious farm.

Taiwan started some economic activities through agriculture. At that time, Li Mei-shu participated in some affairs related to the farmers’ association, and she also served as the leader of tea leaves packaging. Therefore, she felt particularly close to farming life. The saying “Even if people aren’t close, the land will bring people closer”, is strongly depicted in this painting “Dusk”.

Finally, what we can appreciate is that this entire painting gives us the feeling of dusk. But there is also the feeling of anticipation and hope. Everyone can take a look at the traces of light to the left, right above the horizontal line in the background. Does it echo the light of the setting sun under the feet of the characters? Therefore, during dusk, a time where one is supposed to rest, the artist actually gave us a lesson, and that is hope. This is a basic introduction to this piece of artwork.
