My name is Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, born in 1606. I am a Dutch draughtsman (draftsman), painter and printmaker. It is the year 1634. I just moved to Amsterdam to start a new season of my career, getting the taste of fame by being one of the most famous painters in the city, known for depicting dramatic lighting composition, subject on figures and biblical scenes. Besides that, along with Jacques Callot, we have been transforming the etching process from a relatively new reproductive technique into a true art form. Heading towards a bright future, I will be considered as one of the most influential painters and printmakers of the Dutch Golden Age.

Analysis

Painting, back then in 1889, a time when photography had not yet been developed, was the most common way to keep an image of look or memory, as well as expressing an artist’s thoughts.

We now see a young man with matted hair, covered with a black velvet beret, and wearing a garment. These provide hints that this man being at a good age, had no material worries. His face was illuminated by a light coming from the left, signifying that this man was headed to a bright future. His mouth was slightly opened, with eyes looking forward. We can even breathe with his movement, as though he just turned his face towards us, and the special encounter with him began.

His eyes were covered in the shadow of the beret, but we can still see his gaze towards the viewers. As we look closer, through this eye contact, we can see that his eyes seemed unparallel; his right eye seemed to be more in focus than the other. We can see his right pupil was completely depicted on the canvas, compared to his left one. Yet, we can tell that he was looking at us.

If we have the chance to see more self-portraits by Rembrandt, it will show us how these self-portraits actually shaped the image of the painter from his very own perspective. We will find that he had been depicting himself from a similar angle, which was, with dramatic light scenes. It might also reveal to us how he sees himself.

What was he trying to remember about himself at that time? We wonder.

This was probably one of the main reasons why the painter attempted to record this self-portrait. His eyes. He has special ones. Looking at more of his portraits, one might be surprised to discover that his unique gaze actually appeared many times. If it is a characteristic of Rembrandt, what does it mean? Did Rembrandt have stereo blindness? We do not have a definite answer. All that we can be certain of, is that Rembrandt has been a great painter since his generation. He is not only skillful but also a creative pioneer, especially in depicting the lighting in an atmosphere. If this is so, it is even more encouraging: We can have breakthroughs even if we are lacking something in life. We don’t have to be perfect but we can learn to be content with whatever we have.
