My name is Jeanne Hébuterne, a French painter in the late 19th and early 20th century. I once studied at the Acadèmie Colarossi, where in 1917, I met Amedeo Modigliani as my future husband. I became the principal subject of his paintings. We have had sweet days, even though Modigliani has been suffering from health issues, both mentally and physically.

It is 1919 now. We just had our first daughter, and now we are expecting our second child. Things are getting harder. Amedeo’s health is getting worse. All we have is each other. He keeps painting. me as the subject. Seeing myself in his canvas makes me feel loved. He is enough for me.

Analysis

We see this woman named Jeanne Hebuterne, in a yellow jumper from Modigliani’s perspective. In this famous figure form of Modigliani, she was depicted with elongated proportion, and her light blue eyes without pupils, seemed to smile slightly, yet with sorrow. We can see her fingers intertwined, cupping a baby bump. She wore a warm color tone outfit, surrounded by a contrasting blue background, which brings out the emphasis of the figure. Through the intimacy of a husband and wife, Modigliani depicted Hébuterne as a form to present his artistic perspective. Besides the affection and the artistic way of expressing his personal view, we wonder if there is any other reasons that made him see things uniquely?

According to information we can find about the painter, Modigliani had been using alcohol and drugs to mask his long-term health problems, including tuberculosis, the leading cause of death in France during the 1900s. We also learnt that this painting was actually completed in the final days of the couple.

Do physical pain and the after effects of alcohol and drugs distort Modigliani’s perspective? We have no answer. All we can try to understand is that this surreal form comes from a deep pain from different aspects while trying to find a purpose in life.
